About Dr. Levy
Dr Levy was born and raised in New Jersey. He graduated with High Honors from the University of Delaware in 1976 with a BS degree in Animal Science. Dr. Levy received his DVM degree from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1981.
Dr. Levy has been in private veterinary practice since that time, opening his clinic in Jackson, NJ in 1989. In 1993, Dr. Levy completed the requirements (a minimum of five years of clinical veterinary practice, 150 hours of Veterinary Continuing Education, author of two peer reviewed clinical case reports, and passing an extensive two day written and practical examination) and became a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Medical Association’s (AVMA) Board of Veterinary Practitioners- specializing in canine and feline practice. Dr. Levy was recertified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (DAVBP) in 2003.
With over 28 years of experience in conventional veterinary practice and having earned the distinction as Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, Dr. Levy can provide for all your pet’s medical needs. If you pet’s condition warrants special consideration, we will arrange for you to see veterinary specialists in dermatology, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, radiology, and surgery. In the event your pet needs twenty four hour care, we will arrange referral to a veterinary facility capable of providing such care.
Dr. Levy received his initial veterinary acupuncture training in 1994 from the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS). This extensive continuing education course consisted of 150 hours of lecture over a four month period. After completing the course, passing the written and practical exams, submission of two clinical acupuncture case reports, and 40 hours of internship Dr. Levy was recognized by IVAS as a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA) in 1995. He then became a teaching assistant for the IVAS Basic training course in 1995 and 1996. Dr. Levy served as a member of the IVAS course exam committee for two years. In 1998 and 1999 he attended the IVAS Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Herbal seminar series.
In 1998, Dr. Levy was one of the nine founding members of the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture (AAVA).
The mission statement of the academy is to promote the art and science of Veterinary Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, to further the professional development of its members, to encourage the education of veterinarians in Veterinary Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, and to provide leadership and resources in the United States for the advancement of these disciplines. Dr. Levy has served on the Academy’s Board of Directors for eight of the last twelve years including two terms as AAVA President (2001-2002 and 2006-2007).
At the AAVA annual meeting in Albuquerque New Mexico in March 2007 with over 150 veterinarians in attendance Dr. Gary Levy was honored for his efforts as President of the Academy. Dr. Levy was also recognized as he became only the fifth academy member to have completed the academy’s advanced certification program and be recognized as a Fellow of the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture. This honor requires an individual to practice a minimum of five years of clinical veterinary acupuncture, completion of 50 hours veterinary acupuncture continuing education, submission and acceptance of two clinical acupunctures cases suitable for publication, and successful completion of a comprehensive written exam.
